Running (and participating in) publicly attended events can be such a scattershot thing! You're at the mercy of the weather, what other events get scheduled near enough by to steal potential attendees, flu season, all sorts of silliness. As the person who's usually bringing in the guest authors/artists/performers I always feel terrible if they don't have a good crowd, but even with a professional marketing team sometimes you just can't beat the appeal of apple picking or something. :) It's good you've got a positive spin on going to small events anyway. I bet that makes you very popular with event organizers!
